Insurance products

Our service comprises not only insurance cover provision, but also the provision of services including claims handling, assessment of liability, negotiating settlement of claims where appropriate, payment of claims where due, tendering for insurances, appointment of insurers, liaison with insurers and brokers regarding policy queries, insurance advice to both schools and other parties – for example, potential claimants, hirers, visitors, staff, pupils, and so on – as well as risk management advice to schools, and the appointment, monitoring and payment of external specialists – for example, claims handlers, loss adjusters, solicitors.

The core provision, or Combined Insurance, is available at a single price per pupil and includes the key covers required by schools. Other optional covers are also available.

Combined Insurance (core provision)

Liability Insurance
The insurance policies provided include Public Liability, Employers’ Liability, Officials Indemnity, Libel and Slander, Crime Cover and Personal Accident insurance.

Buildings (Fire. Lightning, Explosion, Aircraft Impact, Storm & Flood) Insurance
Buildings insurance provides re-instatement value cover against fire, lightning, explosion, impact by aircraft and storm and flood.

Contents and Fabric (formerly Damage/Loss Risk Pool)
Cover which aims to protect schools against costs and/or losses relating to the contents and certain aspects of the fabric of the school buildings, where these are a delegated responsibility. This provides comprehensive, “new for old” cover against a wide range of perils.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance provides schools with cover when attending trips and visits away from the school premises.  The insurance provides cover for staff, students, belongings and cash.  To activate the cover, schools will be required to declare, termly, the numbers or trips, people and days. The insurance also links with the Evolve education visits system or can be notified using the termly declaration.

Hirers’ Liability Insurance
This insurance provides cover for hirers of school buildings, providing them with cover for damage or personal injury caused by their activity. This provides protection to the school, its employees, visitors and hirers. 

Other covers available

To compliment the core package the following covers are also available for schools to purchase.

Motor Insurance
The insurance policy covers schools with ownership or responsibility for all types of road going vehicles. The cover is fully comprehensive and covers any person driving with the permission of the Council. Read more.


Staff Absence Risk Pooling
An in-house, self-funded scheme, using a pooling arrangement, which provides schools with a guaranteed daily payment when staff members are absent to help offset the additional costs which such absences can generate e.g. supply teacher costs. The scheme provides various options, so that schools may tailor it to their own specific needs.

Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Absence Risk Pooling
An in-house, self-funded scheme, using a pooling arrangement, which provides schools with a lump sum contribution towards the Occupational Maternity, Adoption and Paternity Pay costs incurred when staff members are absent.

Schools’ Responsibilities
Schools should refer to the individual insurance contracts for each category of insurance for details of the insurance cover provided and procedures to be followed.

Renewal of the Combined Insurance is automatic until the expiry of the long term agreement.

Schools can opt to purchase the “Other covers available” prior to 31 March each year, although Motor can also be purchased mid-term.
